Apparently Bill Small will be the new chair at Loyola. Anyone have any thoughts on what this will do for Loyola....I'm assuming it can only be positive for Loyola. But Northwestern on the other hand....seems like literally everyone has left the department there. Small was the only big name there (since Mehta left)...perhaps more changes coming to that department? Always seemed odd to me that northwestern, which is traditionally a 'big-name' institution, had a such a weak/non-research oriented rad onc department. (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

In patients with haematological maligancies pretreatment with enalapril and carvedilol appears to ameliorate the reduction in LV ejection fractionBUT it is only a small study with a small change in EF so I guess we need  a larger study but certainly appears promising!sadian (Source: Doc2Doc BMJ Cardiology)

Planning to go on military active duty for a few years. My questions on this forum are... 1. How much does my horrible recommendation from this year, just one, matter 3-4 years from now? Especially if I am planning on changing specialty? 2. Is it worth a while to stick it through the rest of year, especially when I am sure I will continue to get horrible evaluations? i.e. "medical knowledge is at MS-3 level" Any thoughts on this will be appreciated. So what if your family is Rockwellian or dysfunctional, if growing up was easy or rough. Sure, there is the stereotype that people interested in psychiatry are trying to diagnose themselves or their family, which may be true, but is this appropriate fodder for interview scenarios? Assuming someone has done their own personal work and is well adjusted and can be a good physician/psychiatrist, how is their past relevant for an interview? The FDA has expanded the indication for rivaroxaban (Xarelto, Johnson & Johnson) to include the treatment of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) and to reduce the risk for recurrent DVT and PE. The oral anticoagulant is already approved to reduce postsurgical risk for DVT and PE  after hip- and knee-replacement surgery and to reduce the risk for stroke in people with atrial fibrillation. The new indication was granted under the FDA’s priority review program. “Xarelto is the first oral anti-clotting drug approved to treat and reduce the recurrence of blood clots since the approval of warfarin nearly 60 years ago,” said Richard Pazdur,  director of the FDA’s Office of Hematology and Oncology Products, in an FDA press release. I really enjoy the outpatient world but find myself drawn to psycho-oncology consults. I am weighing whether doing a CL fellowship makes sense. I would not want to do consult work and then see only cancer patients for outpatient follow-up as many psychosocial oncologists in the academic world seem to do. My idea setup (for now at least) would be having an outpatient practice with a mix of psychopharm and therapy and then spending some part of my week doing psycho-oncology consults. So, I'd appreciate any thoughts on: 1. Does this seem possible? 2. Do you think this would require a CL fellowship, or might some private cancer centers be willing to hire someone to do consults without a fellowship? Thanks for any input. So im going to list a few questions(really short and to the point actually) and if people can copy and paste the questions and put their answers next to them, it would really help a lot. haha  question 1: What specialty of medicine do you want to practice when youre a doctor(family, oncology, general surgery, etc.....) question 2: for what reason do you want to do practice in the area that you have chosen?(money, prestige, media, passion, etc....

Hi, I was wondering if any residents/attendings would be willing to share a little bit about how interview selections are made? -How many people are invited to interview/spot typically? -Who reviews the applications? -How do programs balance their "program tier" with "applicant tier" when sending invites? -How much influence do chairs/PD have in this process? -Are their really waves of invitations sent, or do most programs just have one bolus? I know that these things vary with different institutions, but it would be interesting to hear how this all gets done  (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

Link to article This is definitely a very interesting question and one that I have always been intrigued by. How can the two countries that epitomise 'Western Medicine', namely the UK and USA, have such radically different approaches to medical education, in that all American medical students have a previous degree, with our own country only jumping on the graduate entry medicine band wagon a mere 10 years ago. From the very limited amount of studies out there on the effectiveness of graduate entry medicine students vs the standard school leavers no general consensus has yet been met. These studies compare the two groups by comparing their performance in clinical assessments and medical exams. My bet would be that if you measured patient satisfaction after being dealt with by a medical...

Just wanted to run a case by everyone to see how different people handle this situation. Essentially, a young (low 50's) woman with an early stage left-sided breast cancer, post-lumpectomy, with an extremely medial lesion. Standard tangents end up covering a little bit of the contralateral breast in order to include the entire lumpectomy cavity in the field... its either that or treating with more laterally displaced tangents and a match electron field to cover the medial portion. What does everyone do in practice for this situation? (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

This thread: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=953465 got me thinking about something. For the field of oncology, if we find a cure for cancer in the next ten years or whenever (which I really hope we do!). Does that mean all oncologists are out of job? It just doesn't seem like the field would need that many oncologists just to treat cancer if we find a simple cure. Other fields like infectious diseases/internal medicine would be okay because the likelihood of us finding a cure for every infection or every disease would be small but oncology is pretty much focused on one disease. What do you guys think? I almost don't want to become an oncologist for this reason lol (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

Ok so it looks like Lance Armstrong finally got what was coming to him. Is there anybody out there who still believes LA when he claims to have never doped? He has cheated at every stage of his life... the rumors of him doping started all the way back in 1996. He has cheated on his wife and every gf he ever had. He made hundreds of millions of dollars lying to the American public and the world about who he was. So I say strip him of everything. It was all a big lie. And he continues to lie to you and to me with his pathetic excuse for dropping his defense. So my real question... we always hear about how Armstrong "beat" cancer with his "iron will." How the doctors told him he had less than a 50% chance of survival. Today's newspaper actually said he defied the odds an...

Hey everyone! So I have finally compiled a list of schools I want to apply to. Can you let me know what are my chances of getting into at least one? Here's my situation (gonna include lots of details) I transferred from a community college where my gpa was a 3.3, but my sciences were mostly A's with a couple B's. I also got an F in graphic communications because of a family emergency which caused me to be absent from the final. (I explained this in my personal statement.) I don't know how bad this makes me look but I hope they understand. Once I transferred to my university I got all Bs the first quarter due to that same emergency. I withdrew from college for two years to handle that situation but once I got back I completed the remainder of my classes with all A's. I ended up with a...

I apologize beforehand for the extremely loooooonng post, and I understand that this makes it hard for anyone to read it, but I hope that someone will help out :) I guess this post could also function as a personal point of view for people in the same dilemma as me... I have just graduated from a European medical school and I am about to start my residency (most likely in Switzerland). However, I cannot decide between the four specialties in the title: Neurosurgery, Plastics, Orthopedics and Otolaryngology. But I am certain I want to go into surgery. I don't have extreme gr...

Dear fellow Pre-DOs, My Gpa is a 3.5cgpa 3.35sgpa and I just recieved my mcat score :22O mcat ps-7 ver-5 bio-10. I applied to 15 schools early and already submitted 5 secondary applications, including: PCOM,AZCOM,CCOM,ATSU-soma,NSU. I have done research, volunteering and shadowed two MDs and im currently sending in all of my strong LORS. what do you think my chances are? I am multiracial and a cancer survivor. I was planning on retaking the mcat but I don't think I'll be ready by September and the January date seems like its too late. Should I keep on submitting secondaries and hope I get interviews? Or wait to retake the mcat January? I believe that with extra studying I can break 30s or at least high 20s. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

Hi All, Here is an HandBook providing A “who’s who” faculty of Oncology clinician/educators has made this comprehensive Oncology certification/recertification review one of the most highly-regarded resources of the past eight years. Completely updated in 2010, this is an invaluable resource. While there are hundreds of oncology research clinics in the United States alone, all of these clinics are registered and monitored by the US government so volunteer patients are legally covered against malpractice and abuse. While patients DO sign waivers against some ill results that may arise from the testing, the legal protection they get is still ample protection against directly harmful effects brought about by malpractice and incompetence. All the dental schools after i told them i had a publication in cancer research seemed to glance over my 3.0 GPA (which is what i told them i had, im thinking of next year and if i get a 3.6 GPA ill go up to a 3.02GPA). Does anyone know, in more detail, how `good` it looks to have a publication? I dont take medicine for the cf besides antibiotics when I am sick and iv antibiotics when I was in the hospital twice. I do not think the kindney stone has to do with taking too much cf medicine. I saw in other posts that some of you have had very large kidney stones like myself. I was wondering what you all recommend. My plan was to just wait for the stone to drop out of my kidney and when I am in the excessive pain, go to the ER. I really do not want to do the surgery. Which has the friendliest - in terms of accommodation to accent(Don't have a problem with English proficiency), etc? Also, which test center is likely to have higher success rates for IMGs, based on the experience of others? I know I'm probably being a bit fastidious but i just can't afford to fail considering the timing. Any suggestions would be deeply appreciated. Thanks in advance!...

Interested in MD program at either SUNY Upstate or SUNY Buffalo. What are my chances? GPA is average/slightly above for both programs, but will the C+'s hurt me? Organic chemistry never really clicked for me. Thanks. (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

Hey everyone, I am currently a 1st year MPH student at UCLA in Epi. I am thinking about applying to a molecular + epidemiology program this summer and am wondering if anyone has experience/thoughts about this field? I'm especially interested in USC's program in molecular epi (cancer epi)... is anyone here in this program? Thanks!! (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)
