Apparently Bill Small will be the new chair at Loyola. Anyone have any thoughts on what this will do for Loyola....I'm assuming it can only be positive for Loyola. But Northwestern on the other hand....seems like literally everyone has left the department there. Small was the only big name there (since Mehta left)...perhaps more changes coming to that department? Always seemed odd to me that northwestern, which is traditionally a 'big-name' institution, had a such a weak/non-research oriented rad onc department. (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

I think this study is very exciting- Enalapril and carvedilol for preventing chemotherapy-induced left ventricular systolic dysfunction in patients with malignant hemopathies: The OVERCOME trial. J Am Coll Cardiol 2013; DOI: 10.1016/j.jacc.2013.02.072. Available here. In patients with haematological maligancies pretreatment with enalapril and carvedilol appears to ameliorate the reduction in LV ejection fractionBUT it is only a small study with a small change in EF so I guess we need a larger study but certainly appears promising!sadian (Source: Doc2Doc BMJ Cardiology)

PGY-4 in General Surgery. Transferred out of my sucky previous program just to come into a horribly malignant program in which basically everyone hated my guts. Planning to go on military active duty for a few years. My questions on this forum are... 1. How much does my horrible recommendation from this year, just one, matter 3-4 years from now? Especially if I am planning on changing specialty? 2. Is it worth a while to stick it through the rest of year, especially when I am sure I will continue to get horrible evaluations? i.e. "medical knowledge is at MS-3 level" Any thoughts on this will be appreciated. Because this is not a typical occurrence and not many people have asked about this in the past, I wanted to see what people think, preferably from current residents/fellows/attendings. I was recently accepted to the same schools as my fiancee and ultimately, our goal is to also stay together during residency/fellowship/life if this is possible. I have my own specific ambitions, but at the end of the day, I think it would make it easier on us to be as close as possible. Is it taboo to apply to different specialties at the same location or hospital? I obviously do not know what I want to specialize in, but I prefer medical oncology, so therefore IM, at the moment (I know this is difficult for DOs to get into, but that's a separate story) because I spent a great deal of time observing it and ...

i'm a 3rd year, LOVE basic science oncology research and just started exploring radiation oncology as a career option, I had a few questions how much day-to-day patient interaction is there? from my VERY limited experience, I've seen techs doing a lot of the work, I'm going to need to do more shadowing obviously but am curious.. it's a relatively new field so data may still be limiting, but any increases in radiation-induced cancer seen in radiation oncologists/techs? kind of paranoid about that... how competitive is the field? I have a Step 1 of 225-230. I know that will limit me to the lower tier programs but do I still have a chance if I apply broadly? I have just finished my medicine rotation and I have rotated for 3 weeks in my 2nd year through surg path and hemepath. I'll lay out my pros and cons for each below: Things I like about medicine: - I enjoy rounds, discussing and presenting patients and coming up with a plan. - I enjoy conferences. - I enjoy working with (most) patients, but there are times when it can get frustrating/depressing. Things I dislike: - All of the paperwork. - Somewhat of a malignant atmosphere in my opinion (this might be because of third year, but a lot of nerves in terms of presenting well, writing a good note, getting a good history, getting along with the team, etc.) - Running ...

Now I did talk to another PD before I resign to apply for a spot again to start again in July as a PGY1. I am planning to tell my new PD the whole story and what happened. I am just concerned that I will be labeled as a trouble maker and I am not! I wish i knew that filing a concern will take me to this ! I would have just quit. If any current or past fellows have books they read or wished they had read prior to first yr of fellowship I would appreciate it. I would plug this book: Mastering Communication with Seriously Ill Patients by Tony Back. This is a quick read and great review of giving bad news, being compassionate w sick pts. I saw in a few program review posts that questions about family/upbringing were considered standard. This seems invasive, inapropriate, and irrelevant to me. So what if your family is Rockwellian or dysfunctional, if growing up was easy or rough. Sure, there is the stereotype that people interested in psychiatry are trying to diagnose themselves or their family, which may be true, but is this appropriate fodder for interview scenarios? Assuming someone has done their own personal work and is well adjusted and can be a good physician/psychiatrist, how is their past relevant for an interview? What are interviewers getting at with this type of question? Evading the question likely just makes interviewers more currious, these are psychiatrists after all. I'm not crippled or ashamed of the...

Im too pot committed to leave now. I realize the grass is greener but if everything is really worse than this then I'm in trouble. I just have not been satisfied or interested in the work; we aren't supposed to be technicians but thats all it feels we are. none of our attendings seem happy or enthusiastic, very few of our residents seem so. Same with all the non-physician staff. Maybe its an academic thing? I feel stripped of my enthusiasm, creativity, youth. I understand the utility of finishing, though I can not see myself practicing at this point, but is there any way to decompress how long it ...

Hey everyone, So at the beginning of this semester I began volunteering at the local hospital for three hours a week. I was assigned to oncology which is a field that I am somewhat interested in. My shift is Saturday from 6-9 PM so only the really serious and unhealthy patients are still there :(. During the ten weeks that I've been volunteering I've already seen two people die and had to bring them down to the morgue. Is this normal? Is your hospital volunteering experience as depressing as mine? I'm not complaining obviously, I realize this happens at hospitals I'm merely curious. (Source: Student Doctor Network Forums)

After taking in a breath that was perceivably deeper than before, he continued, "So, tell me, do you feel that was enough exposure? Are you confident that those 10 hours were representative of the profession, representative enough for you to validly spend the rest of your life on this journey through medicine? Did those 10 hours render the entire spectrum of medicine [from the highest highs to the lowest lows] for your consideration? Are you confident that pursuing an MD is the correct pursuit for you?" The FDA has expanded the indication for rivaroxaban (Xarelto, Johnson & Johnson) to include the treatment of deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) and to reduce the risk for recurrent DVT and PE. The oral anticoagulant is already approved to reduce postsurgical risk for DVT and PE  after hip- and knee-replacement surgery and to reduce the risk for stroke in people with atrial fibrillation. The new indication was granted under the FDA’s priority review program. “Xarelto is the first oral anti-clotting drug approved to treat and reduce the recurrence of blood clots since the approval of warfarin nearly 60 years ago,” said Richard Pazdur,  director of the FDA’s Office of Hematology and Oncology Products, in an FDA press release.
